Typhoons and heavy rain dominated Facebook conversations on natural disasters over the past year, but posts about flood control projects drew even more public attention, according to a study by Capstone Intel Corp.
The study covered public Facebook posts from June 24, 2025 to June 24, 2026 and grouped disaster-related conversations based on the topics people discussed and the engagement those posts received.
Posts about typhoons, heavy rain and weather advisories accounted for the biggest share of disaster-related conversations at 36 percent. Together, they recorded a total engagement score of 13,917,621.7.
By comparison, posts about flood control, corruption and public accountability made up just 19.5 percent of the discussions. Yet they generated the highest engagement score of 30,116,613.6, more than twice the engagement recorded by weather-related posts.
Discussions on earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity accounted for 29.4 percent of all posts and generated an engagement score of 14,348,500.9.
Posts about flood impacts, urban drainage and community disruption made up 7.9 percent of the conversations and recorded 5,193,655.4 in engagement. Other disaster-related posts accounted for 7.1 percent of the discussions and generated 3,152,304.3 in engagement.
The least discussed topic was relief, preparedness and community response, which accounted for just 0.2 percent of all posts and recorded an engagement score of 63,828.6.
The figures suggest that while Filipinos turn to Facebook for weather updates during disasters, discussions become far more active when the conversation shifts to flood control projects and related issues.
The findings are based on public Facebook posts collected during the one-year study and do not represent the views of all Filipinos.
Capstone-Intel Research and Publications Director Kaye Domingo said the study shows that conversations about disasters on Facebook are no longer limited to weather updates. She said flood control projects emerged as one of the topics that drew the strongest public engagement during the one-year study.
“This isn’t the first time flood control has dominated the conversation. Capstone-Intel’s SONA-focused report last month found it was the top issue Filipinos wanted addressed — and this year-long study shows that the engagement wasn’t a passing moment, but a consistent pattern across an entire year of disaster-related discussions online,” Domingo added.
